A Brief History of the Bowling Club

Introduction

The Bowling Club at the Botanical Gardens in Atherton has been at the heart of the community for more than 170 years. Built on traditions of friendship, recreation, and teamwork, the club has grown from Victorian roots into a welcoming space where people of all ages can enjoy both competitive and social bowling.

Origins – Botanical Gardens, Circa 1850

During the Victorian era, in the mid-19th century, clubs with greenhouses were founded across industrial Lancashire by those with an interest in botany. To remain financially viable, many of these clubs obtained licences to sell beer and spirits, and soon expanded their facilities to include billiards and bowling greens. This was the beginning of the Botanical Gardens in Atherton, which has continued to provide leisure and social opportunities for the local community ever since.

A Bowler’s Recollection – 1986

In 1986, when the Baptist Church on Dan Lane was demolished, timber from the building—together with donated supplies from a local timber company—was used to construct a new bowling hut. Members, many of them retired, built the hut themselves and laid the surrounding flags, greatly at a

improving facilities and finances for the bowling section. The hut was officially opened by Mr. R. Howcroft, a respected bowler, committee member, and prize-winning gardener. From the outset, it was agreed that the bowling club should serve the whole community, not just men.

Committee Endeavours – 2000s

By the early 2000s, the original hut had deteriorated beyond repair. In July 2002, thanks to a grant from the Co-op and the commitment of members, a new Bowling Club House was built. These modern facilities were designed to secure the club’s future and to be enjoyed by both bowlers and the wider community for many years to come.

Recent Developments – 2013 to 2025

The club has continued to face financial challenges, yet the committee remains dedicated to maintaining high standards and securing funding. From 2013 to 2025, a series of grants supported the purchase of new equipment, shelters, benches, and buildings around the green. In 2025, the club successfully upgraded its floodlights to the latest LED technology, improving both performance and efficiency while reducing costs.

Alongside these developments, the club has promoted participation through tuition sessions for beginners, as well as social events such as round robins and annual cup competitions. These activities ensure that the club remains a welcoming place for both competitive and friendly bowling, enjoyed by local residents and visitors alike.

Looking Ahead

As the club moves forward, the committee and members remain committed to preserving its proud history while continuing to adapt to the needs of future generations. With modern facilities, a strong sense of community, and a welcoming spirit, the Bowling Club looks set to remain a valued part of Atherton life for many years to come.
